Message: I love spending time in the fume hood, mixing liquid and boiling stuff; they call that a Chemistry major! If you know ‘Sizzla’, ‘Richie Spice’, ‘Lucky Dube’ and ‘Bob Marley’ then you know the type of music I crave for. My biggest nightmare is to be constantly in trouble for saying aloud what other people would rather say from mouth to ear… “While some people die for eating too much other pass away thanks to starvation”. We see it everyday; what do you and I do to make a difference? Let’s not try to change the whole world but let’s change the world of one person at a time. What about WUSC and I? It’s a long story… Peace ‘n luv.
I’m Nakita Haynes and I am pursuing my Bachelor’s Degree in Forensic Science. Although painfully shy in nature, I nevertheless enjoy interacting with people thereby learning new things and being exposed to different cultures. I got involved in WUSC through a good friend who helped me to realize that small actions can surmount to large deeds.
Hello! I’m Emma Taillefer, a second year IDS major. I love people, different places, nature, and especially people in places of nature. This is my second year on WUSC and enjoy being a part of this hard-working community. In the words of Nelly Furtado…. “Life’s too short to live it just for you”. Trent is great, especially once you find a way to give back to your community. Take care!
My name is Chi-Chi Ogbue; I’m a 4th year Biology and Anthropology student. I like to listen to music, watch movies, and spend time with my family and friends. I joined WUSC because a friend of mine introduced the organization to me and also because of what WUSC’s mission is. I really believe that everyone is entitled to have an education and this is why I wanted to get involved with the Student Refugee Program, to give someone who is less fortunate a chance to get an education and live in an environment that will ensure them a better life.
Hey, I’m Sasha, a 3rd year Forensic Science and Psychology student at Trent. I like soccer, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and long walks on the beach. A friend told me about WUSC and since then I have been a member. I love helping others and learning about new cultures and through WUSC I have been able to do both. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Be the change you want to see in the world” and I don’t think there is a better way to live.
My name is Jasmine Hamilton and I am a second year Biochemistry student at Trent Uni. I am also an international student, and I’ve grown to appreciate the benefits and power than comes from united cultures and backgrounds. I heard of WUSC from a friend who has been sponsored by the refugee programme, I then learnt of WUSC’s aims and decided that I wanted to join the organization.
I’m Julia Jenkins. I’ve been involved with Trent University students since 1995. As a College Don, a mature student, the Administrative Assistant for the International Program, and as Ottawa Liaison for the WUSC SRP. Through WUSC I am surrounded with great students that are so dedicated and supportive of the Student Refugee Program. As a Staff member I am able to provide support to the Local Committee and the SRP as they continue to build awareness of the WUSC mission.
Hi everyone! I’m Esther Sue from the beautiful islands of Fiji! I’m a first year Business Administration major. I like reading, chocolates, baking and frangipanis (as you can tell from my picture!) I got involved with WUSC by hearing about the Student Refugee Program which I found to be a very worthwhile cause. Since joining WUSC I have been able to meet a lot more people and learn a lot from these people. It has been a great experience!
My name is Xochilt Exué… and yes that is a name (and a girl’s name)! I love peanut butter, yogurt and shrimps, and maybe someday I’ll come up with a delicious way to combine them into one dish! I am from Nicaragua and I loooooooooooooove my country!!! I heard about WUSC from a friend and the day I asked about it in the TIP office they were having a meeting, so it is fate!
… I love contributing to anything needed and I love international students and Canadians working together… Ah! and I love people, and yes I love loving things
.
My name is Bianca De Castro and I am in my 2nd year at Trent doing a French/Biology joint major in the Con. Ed. Program. I got involved with WUSC last year after finding out about it through a friend, and this year I am the WUSC secretary, so you can expect to get a ton of e-mails from me! Aside from checking my e-mail though, I enjoy reading, watching CSI, spending time with friends, and learning new languages! I love anything to do with travel and hope to teach English overseas when I am finished with university. I am looking forward to an exciting year with WUSC!
My name is Tekira Shani Hypolite. Currently I am enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Program, with an Honours Major in Biology at Trent and will graduate in May 2008. I am a very sociable person, a diligent worker and a team player. I am always willing to go above and beyond my regular duties. I love to help and liaison with individuals, whenever and wherever I see that it is needed. Some of my passions are cooking, bowling, dancing, writing, and community service. I am very proud of being part of the WUSC community because I know now that I can help make a difference in the world and not just by turning a frown upside down!
Hello, my name is Royette Tavernier. I am from the Nature Isle of the Caribbean, Dominica. Presently, I am a 3rd year Psychology major at Trent University. When I am not buried in the books, I am probably watching television, renting movies, or just relaxing with friends. Recently, I joined the WUSC (World University Services of Canada) team as co-coordinator of the Publicity Committee. I am also a Peer Mentor and an international ambassador. This past Summer I worked with the registrar’s office as a New Student Orientation Program Assistant. There is so much that we can accomplish by working together, towards a common goal. This year I hope to work with the WUSC family to make the smallest differences that means the world to people the world over!
My name is Jessica Williams and I am originally from Ottawa. This is my second year here at Trent and I am an International Development Studies major with a keen interest in Latin America, Hispanic studies and Indigenous groups of people. I learned about WUSC through an incredibly inspirational family friend from home who is the executive director of WUSC in Ottawa. This year I am the vice coordinator of the SRP committee and a member of the events committee. This year is gearing up to be a fantastic one for WUSC here at Trent, and I hope we will be able to expand our horizons in many new directions, touching the lives of many more at Trent!
Hello and Salaam. My name is probably one of the most butchered names on the Trent University campus and you know what, I forgive you beforehand if you happen to do the same too! The name is Nusrat Mutmainnah (try saying it really really fast!) and I happen to be one of those people who cannot tell where home is! I am originally from Bangladesh, was brought up in the United Arab Emirates, spent three years in Peterborough (Canada) and am currently in the middle of relocating to Philadelphia, USA. Go figure! Anyhow, it is a great pleasure to meet you. Currently, I am a 4th year student majoring in Biochemistry with a minor in Business Administration. I came across WUSC while serving Chair of the Trent International Students Association (TISA), 2006-2007 when I was struck by the energy, efficiency and magnitude of the organization. TISA partnered up with WUSC and raised funds for the organization during the International Dinner: Mama’s Kitchen. Since then, I have been involved in WUSC and volunteered to be on their committee. I also did a research paper on them (and got a good grade too
). Aside from that, I love to cook, so if you have a good recipe please do share! I think I said enough for now. You probably will see me a lot at the TIP Office as I work there or find me at the DNA labs as I literally live there! Should you require any further information or help about the WUSC SRP committee and Ottawa liaison committee, I would be more than happy to help you out.
My name is Rachael Edge. I am in my second year here at Trent. My major is International Development with a minor in Women’s Studies. I got involved in WUSC initially through Rocky because he was telling me about the conference he went to in Ottawa this summer, which intrigued me to know more about this group. I went to check it out on Clubs and Groups Day, and talked to a (very informed) young lady who made me want to be part of the WUSC team! Presently, I am on the Community Liaison Committee and the Ottawa Liaison Committee. Other than that, I’m just excited about getting involved with the Trent community in achieving the WUSC goals!
My name is Laila Nouman. I am from Yemen and am a second year student at Trent doing a joint major in Biology and Psychology. I found out about WUSC through Rocky and Kayembe and I am currently a member in the SRP committee.
My name is Catherine Phillips and I am a second year Trent student majoring in Cultural Studies. After learning about WUSC through Clubs and Groups Day at Trent, I became aware of the importance of the organization and decided to provide my support. I am now a member of the Events Committee and hope to help inform others about the significance of WUSC and its impact on the world.
Hey guys. I’m Renate Katunda. I’m from Kenya but I’m a Congolese from the Democratic Republic of Congo. I’m 20 years old and my birthday is on February 10th. I like swimming and reading novels. I don’t talk that much but I’m trying to be sociable as much as possible. This is all I have to say about myself.
Hey everyone! My name is Michelle Hughes and I represent the islands of Antigua & Barbuda. I am currently a 2nd year student majoring in Biology with a minor in Spanish. As a fairly new member of the Local WUSC committee and as this year’s Vice Publicity Coordinator, I foresee many great things to be achieved this year. I hope that many more people will become aware of WUSC and its many positive accomplishments over the years. As youthful and intelligent human beings, we ALL deserve the right to education and good living. By supporting WUSC, you support this belief and all those in need of these two essentials. Hope to see you around!
