World Aids DayWorld AIDS Day is an opportunity for people around the world to learn about how AIDS is affecting those around us. It is also an occasion for us to honor the heroes who are struggling to resist, survive and overcome AIDS, especially in places like Africa. CAP AIDS invites us to share in their celebration of World AIDS Day through an exciting social evening featuring live Canadian and African musical performances, dance, food, drinks, prizes and a silent auction! If you will be in Toronto or the GTA on Friday, December 4th, you are invited to support this wonderful initiative. Proceeds go toward the CAP AIDS Vocational & Employment Skills Training Program benefiting AIDS-orphaned youth in Ethiopia and Uganda. See the poster for more details.

Support WUSC in the Afghanistan Challenge

October 29, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Afghanistan ChallengeWUSC at Trent University is excited to announce that we will be supporting a new project this year: the Afghanistan Challenge! The Afghanistan Challenge is a partnership between CARE Canada, MEDA, Rotary International, and the Government of Canada that seeks to challenge Canadians to get involved in the rebuilding of Afghanistan.

Though Afghanistan is progressing slowly with the aid of international organizations, including Canadian humanitarian organizations, it still faces many challenges. Hunger still persists in this war-torn country, the health-care system is severely crippled, women face barriers to education and infrastructure is in need of rehabilitation. However, with the help of the Canadian Government, the Afghanistan Challenge hopes to implement projects that will improve the lives of Afghans.

Many WUSC Local Committees around Canadian university campuses are taking action to support the Challenge. We, at Trent University, also intend to make more people within the Peterborough community more aware of the Challenge. If you are interested in supporting through donations or even finding out more, ensure that you look out for WUSC‘s information booths set up throughout the Trent University campus from Monday, 9th November, to Friday, 13th November between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm. Proceeds from items on sale go directly towards the Afghanistan Challenge.

Keep up-to-date on what is going on within the Afghanistan Challenge at Trent University by joining our Facebook Group page. Also, head on over to the official Afghanistan Challenge Facebook page and consider following the Challenge via Twitter.

Support the UN’s Millennium Campaign ‘Stand Up Against Poverty’

October 16, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Stand Against PovertyBy now, you should have probably heard about this campaign from booths set up on campus. If you have not, then here is your chance to get a bit of useful information. For the fourth year in a row, WUSC, through Local Committees, will be supporting the UN’s Millennium Campaign to ‘Stand Up Against Poverty‘. This is all in an effort to send a clear and urgent message to world leaders that we want to end poverty and inequality by 2015, which happens to be one of the MDGs that 189 world leaders agreed to adopt as part of the Millennium Declaration at the United Nations Millennium Summit in September of 2000.

How can you support? Head on over to StandAgainstPoverty.org to find out how you can take action now to end poverty! Supporting can be as simple as submitting your name or hosting public events to publicize the campaign. Poverty will only end if we take an active part in its eradication. Let’s start here.
