On Friday, February 26th, the World Affairs Colloquium will be hosting a talk about Refugee Stories and WUSC‘s Student Refugee Programme. Among the speakers are McAnthony Keah, author of “Growing Up Naked”, who will be sharing the stories that inspired his book, and Michelle Manks, the current Programme Officer for the SRP in WUSC Ottawa. Come join us in discussion at the LEC Pit (3:00pm on Friday) as we take this opportunity to learn more about the issues being faced by refugees.
Those Trent University students who supported us in January’s Levy Petition are especially invited to attend this talk. Invite your friends! The occasion promises to be quite informative and engaging.
Vote for levy increase, help to sponsor two SRP students
January 19, 2010 by TrentWUSC-IT · Leave a Comment
WUSC at Trent University is one of the levy groups on the Trent University campus. What this means is that our organization “[receives] direct funding from a student fee that is charged to each full-time undergraduate student with their tuition and ancillary fees” (ref. TCSA). Funding from the levy goes toward assisting the SRP within WUSC at Trent University in sponsoring a new student every year. During the TCSA elections in March 2010, the local committee hopes to request an increase in the levy so that we can sponsor two students for the next academic year. If successful, two students from countries abroad will have the opportunity to obtain a tertiary-level education in Canada. However, as with all requests of this nature, the TCSA needs to see that a certain proportion of the student body agree with this levy increase prior to funds being collected. Here is where we need your help.
Between now and Thursday, January 21st, WUSC members will be going around to collect signatures from students. Should we collect 700 signatures we will be eligible to make a levy request during the March 2010 elections. As a Trent University student, we hope you will support us after witnessing all of the great things that WUSC and its partner organizations are doing through education.
Here are a few things you should know before providing your signature:
- WUSC at Trent University’s levy is non-refundable,
- Only full-time undergraduate Trent University students can sign,
- Student information is cross-checked with current enrollment register,
- Students cannot sign more than once.
Also be reminded that we will also appreciate your vote for the levy increase at the March 2010 elections. Thank you!
Volunteers needed for SRP welcome and ISW
August 18, 2009 by TrentWUSC-IT · Leave a Comment
We are sorry for the late notice, but these two pieces of news are urgent. All current WUSC at Trent University members are asked to take note of the following upcoming events:
New SRP Student Arrival
The new SRP sponsored student will be arriving on Wednesday, August 19th. We need to form a welcome committee to meet him at the airport and subsequently accompany him back to Peterborough. If you are in the Peterborough or Toronto area during that day and would like to be apart of this exciting occasion, please e-mail the Chair informing her of your intent by today at 2:00pm. Transportation from Peterborough to Toronto will be provided. Other details will be given upon request.
ISW Clubs and Groups Day
The Clubs and Groups Day is a day during Trent University’s ISW or orientation week when campus organizations publicize their presence to new students in an effort to recruit more members. This year, Clubs and Groups Day falls on Wednesday, September 9th, from 9:00am to 3:00pm around the Bata Library and WUSC at Trent University will be there to represent WUSC. We need current members to volunteer at our informational booth for whichever time slot they are comfortable with. Please contact the Chair if you would like to participate.
Both of these events are great opportunities to meet new people and to share your experiences of volunteering within WUSC! Please consider joining us.
The challenge faced by volunteer turnover within WUSC
July 11, 2009 by TrentWUSC-IT · Leave a Comment
Every year, WUSC committees around Canada undergo some form of change in membership. Individuals may change roles within the organization or new replacements may enter. As with any organization, its effectiveness is only as good as its membership, so it comes as no surprise that there are concerns when there is a majority turnover of membership within WUSC.
As you will see in the video, one of the challenges faced by majority turnover is the great loss of valuable volunteer experience. New members who take on executive positions are at a slight disadvantage if they have little to no experience working beside their predecessors. While many positions are “learn-as-you-go” and can readily accommodate new and enthusiastic members, areas such as the Student Refugee Program, which has tremendous responsibilities, require quick transfer of knowledge so that progress is not slowed.
