Design talent and skills needed for IT Committee
February 28, 2009 by TrentWUSC-IT · Leave a Comment
The IT/Communications Committee is looking for some new talent to take WUSC at Trent University to entirely new levels! If you have been considering joining the organization, but are unsure about where you can express your skills and talents, then consider joining the IT/Communications Committee.
Our committee is probably one of the smallest within the organization, but it does play an important part. Most of what we do overlaps with the activities of other committees and, as a collective, are able to get WUSC moving. However, as with all team-based groups, we need more people with new energy who will contribute their skills.
You may be asking yourself several questions about what is required of you in order to get started in the IT/Communications Committee. So we compiled a short FAQ to answer some of the common questions you may have. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have!
Before we continue, we would like to mention that you can volunteer your time by helping WUSC at Trent University in a variety of other capacities that have nothing to do with IT/Communications. Please check out our Volunteer page for descriptions of what each committee is responsible for doing, then determine your niche.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
- What do you do in this committee?
Whatever we want! Just kidding! When the other committees plan events for WUSC they usually require technical skills to get a few things done. For example, an upcoming film screening will require publicity around campus, so the Publicity Committee will ask for us to design an attractive poster with the relevant details. We design a poster, get it revised several times then we send the final product off to the Events Committee for printing. - So you just produce posters? That’s it? How boring!
If that was all we did we would indeed be bored. However, we do much more! Look at this website, for example. The IT/Communications Committee was responsible for setting up and currently manages the WUSC at Trent University website. Contrary to what some believe, setting up and managing a good website is not easy work. We are proud of the work WUSC does so it comes as no surprise that our online presence should reflect that we are serious about it as well. Since we also deal with communication, we research and implement new ways of providing communication services to members. Additionally, we take responsibility for media operation and a bit of media coverage at various WUSC events. - Do I need specific skills in order to join your committee?
Yes and no. We expect that you will have some skills or talents that you feel may be an asset to the committee, but we won’t expect you to be fluent in web languages and a whiz at graphic design. Of course, if you do have those then that’s great! Although much of the things we do require writing/editing code and manipulating graphics, we also need people providing ideas. You may have some great design ideas you want to share and see implemented in digital form! That’s something we can definitely use. At the same time, however, we also need a strong backbone of people who can materialize abstract ideas either through code or digital graphics. If you have even a general idea of how to work with HTML, PHP, MySQL, Photoshop, etc., then please consider joining. - It sounds as though you guys are a bunch of geeks!
And that’s not a question. Is that what the kids today are calling people who do what we do? Awesome! Finally, a title to append to our names. Seriously, though, we do delve in to a lot of technical stuff and if “geek” comes with the turf, we couldn’t care less. Many of us are far from being professionals at what we do, but we give our best for the betterment of the organization. As a matter of fact, you will find that others in the committee do these sort of things as hobbies. Come share what you know and simulataneously learn from others. - Will I get paid for the work I do?
No. This is purely volunteer work for a non-profit NGO. You can find out more about what WUSC does here. - I’m sold! When can I get started?
Wow! That’s great! You can get started right away. Simply drop us a line with your intention to join and we will get back to you. To get things rolling (this is not mandatory), you may want to give us an idea of your skills or your current work if any is available. Thanks for your interest! - I want to help out, but I’m a busy student. What can I do?
We completely understand. Most of our members are busy students. The last thing we would want to do is to get in the way of your academics, especially if you are an upper-year student at Trent University. Any bit of time you can contribute to the committee/organization is more than appreciated. Hold on… we don’t live in the dinosaur age. It’s the 21st century! You can tele-commute once in a while if you prefer!
